Bought Something on BuyNothing

I confess. I bought 2 pounds of Fair Trade Coffee while in Santa Cruz, on "Buy Nothing Day." Sorry. I think it is a great idea and have bought nothing in the past. Though I do my best to avoid legalism, when there's a greater good to be had.

I'm confused, what is "Buy Nothing Day?"

It's a backlash movement against the largest shopping day of the year; the day after Thanksgiving. As some have understood this day to be a holiday in itself (an ode to good consumerism), "buy nothing day" has been the going on for a number of years now. I try to participate each year, though this day I was in my former whereabouts, and decided to purchase one of my favorite coffees, which helped to provide fair wages for the underimpoverished bean pickers of Guatemala.

I don't dare go to the mall on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but I wonder-does going to the grocery store to buy eggnog and stamps count for or against "buy nothing" day? It wasn't the mall, which is what I assume you meant, but I needed stamps. (I could rationalize why I "needed" eggnog, but let's face it: it's just eggnog.) -krista

Yes Krista, I would also add that what you bought, does not count. I think the heart of 'Buy Nothing Day' is to not be consumeristic. You did just fine. Thanks for the addition Rick.
