Some Frivolous Friday Musings

-> Most humourous headline of the day:
    "President Bush Marks Earth Day"

-> Most inconceivably published title:

-> And a 3 questions on the nature of "relevant":

When did the Gospel suddenly become irrelevant to those whom we are trying to make the gospel relevant for? Hasn't it been relevant for them all along? In essence, aren't we the ones the Gospel is less "relevant" to?

Happy Earth Day, folks. Here are 8 simple things that will help you to do your part as a steward of God's creation.
  • 8 - Carry your own mug. (save on the expendable paper cup. Starbucks will even give you an [almost worthless] additional 10 cent discount if you bring one.)

  • 7 - Reuse your plastic bags. (Or refuse them, especially when the bagger at the grocery mart wants wrap your pack of gum in one.)

  • 6 - Clean the air by planting a tree, or tending a garden. (It may not reverse the carcinogenic fallout of Bush's "Clean Skies" initiative, but every little bit helps.)

  • 5 - Turn off electrical devices when you are not using them as it will save energy and reduce CO2 emissions.

  • 4 - Recycle.

  • 3 - Leave your car at home. (Or be like the Simkins kids and don't buy one. Use public transit if or whenever possible, or perhaps even carpool. Gas prices alone are almost reason enough.)

  • 2 - Use less water. (According to National Geographic, "A family of four, each showering for five minutes a day, uses 700 gallons of water a week; this is enough for a three-year supply of drinking water for one person.")

  • 1 - Oppose the War. (Let's face it, as long as we're on the topic of quality of life, environmental destruction aside, war is neither favorable to civilians nor the soldiers they send to fight. To quote System of a Down "Why don't presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?" This is one of the more ill-conceived, ill-preparred, and ill-warranted wars of our time.)
Cheers, friends.

"Finally! A book on Christian sterilization that's almost as exciting as the act itself!"

your questions concerning the irrelevance/relevance of the gospel are right on track. keep asking them, dr. j.

my man,

when did you become an environmentalist? i'm constantly shocked at your ability to just jump up and support whatever hot topic is at hand. you should really consider sticking to one agenda, m'kay.

you have fun saving your planet....for the rest of your life.

(for those who are reading this and aren't james, that was sarcasm. doc, you know i love you, man)

I would just like to tout the fact that Starbucks is giving you free coffee if you bring in your own mug.

I ALWAYS have a travel mug with me, and today I forgot mine. Sadness.

I am a huge propo of public transit.

That being said, we're totally going to buy a car, because B works too far away. If he worked in the city limits, we'd probably be ok.

James - Great suggestions for earth day. However, in reference to #2, isn't it true that water can neither be created nor destroyed? I'm definitely not a scientist, so maybe someone with some more intelligence in this area can enlighten me. If my proposition is true, how can one waste water? Just a (probably mis-informed)thought. Hey Mike,

Good question. In terms of conserving water, the general implication is that of potable water. Hope that's of some help.

How's things?

Hey JAmes,

Thanks for sharing music last night.

My last post was on your blog was months ago, maybe on your "I voted against pres. Bush - damn that felt good" post. Then I didn't have a blog and posted as "Mike Crockett" (my name). Sorry I'm not any of the other Mike's. The mystery continues... ;-) Thank Brooke for her help cleaning up and cooking/setting up for me too.

Ahhh, here was my last post - no nov 6:

Noted Blogger in Iraq
About a month ago a nice pacific northwesterner dropped a comment on my blog. Upon visiting her site I found a blog worthy of note, aptly titled Baghdad Burning. I have included it on the right-hand index, under the "Exceptional Bloggers" heading, and simply titled, "Girl in Iraq." Here's an excerpt from her post election entry:

"To the red states (and those who voted for Bush): You deserve no better- I couldn't wish worse on you if I tried. He represents you perfectly... and red really is your color. It's the color of the blood of thousands of Iraqis and by the time this four-year catastrophe in the White House is over, tousands of Americans, likely. To the blue states (and those who were thinking when they voted): Condolences. Good luck- you'll need it.

I would recommend your visiting this Girl in Iraq, as she often has words our American news media hasn't the balls to discuss.

James,

I am a christian brother in Salem and in awe of the ministry of Kelly, Jeff and all of you (including Alex, his wife and their musical talent). Your writings are brilliant and amazing. I look forward to meeting you someday, hopefully soon. I am a closet republican. I hope you won't hold it against me.

In Him,

mike ;-)

Regarding #7 - Anyone in the Northshore area reading this can give their plastic bags to Jeff & I. We use them to pick up dog *&^(. It's a form of recycling.

Thanks for your words Mike. Tis quite kind of you. And no, I don't hold how you choose to vote against you. There are some other registered republicans who visit these parts as well, so no worries on this end of it.
